Reflections

Water is a reflective surface. Placing a pond where it will reflect something interesting like a tree - or even some outdoor artwork - can be an endless source of fascination as the reflections change in response to the changing light. The sun, the moon, and the stars will all cast gorgeous reflection on your pond. This will make it an exciting focal point even at night when all of the lights are out.

A fire pit near the pond brings to mind beach bonfires, and offers another way to use the water to reflect light: this time from the dancing flames.

Drama or Relaxation

Some ponds - particularly modern geometric pond designs - lend themselves to a more intimate exploration of the water. For example, stepping stones that are just above the surface of the water could be a way to get up close and personal with what’s going on in the water. A few submersible lights can make the pond into a truly exceptional focal point at night.

Since a pond needs to be aerated to keep the water from stagnating, you might as well go big with a waterfall and add a touch of serenity at the same time. A waterfall spilling into the pool helps add the white noise that will drown out environmental noise like traffic, while creating a tranquil atmosphere.

Whether the waterfall is modern (such as a sheer-descent waterfall) or a majestic boulder-lined feature that cascades into the pond, there are infinite ways to customize the waterfall to create drama or relaxation, or a little of both. Each time you move a stone, you immediately change the look and sounds of the waterfall. Move a rock to lessen the intensity of the sound, or make your waterfall a more prominent feature.

Wildlife

Ponds naturally attract wildlife. Since many animals are struggling from habitat loss, offering them a much-needed source of clean water is a great way to help the environment and do some wildlife watching at the same time.

Adding a cold-hardy fish such as koi to your pond is the ultimate in relaxation. If you add a small paver patio or a pebble “beach” will give you a place to sit and watch your fish. A patio or beach also invites kids of all ages to play with the water.

Whether your pond is modern or natural, be sure to add plenty of aquatic plants to give it life. Go for a mix of plants that will thrive in the pond, as well as a variety of plants that live on the banks.

A Feature for Small or Large Backyards

A pond can be any size or shape, which makes them very versatile. They can be prominent features in a large backyard, or they could be tucked into the corner of a tiny backyard. In fact, if your backyard has any unused corners or areas, a pond is the perfect way to bring some life to that space.
